In January of 2006 I went to Portugal and had Nerve/Mucosa cell surgery, which is similar to stem cell surgery. My circulation improved almost immediately and my left wrist flexor started working a little. Everything in Portugal went smoothly and a month later I began going to “Project Walk” in Carlsbad, California.

In June I went back to Oregon and started with the new “Project Walk” up here. I’ve been exercising three days a week or almost 11 months. Although it is slow, I’ve been happy with the results so far. I’m splitting my weeks between “Project Walk” and school. I got to “Project Walk” on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I go to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

In the last several months I have made slow but steady improvements. My whole body has gotten stronger; my legs and arms are considerably stronger and more stable. My muscle control is slowly growing in my back and obliques. I have slight positional movement in my legs. This is difficult to explain, but in different positions I have trace movements with certain muscles.

I am attending Western Oregon University, in Monmouth which is near my home. The two courses I’m taking are Traditional Japanese History and Environmental Conservation. I have just read a book called Ishmael for my environmental Conservation course. I would recommend it to everyone. It as amazing, a real eye opener.

In December, when my dad, Jocko, was up here I got back in a car with adaptive hand controls and drove for the first time since my injury. I’m also working on getting a new wheelchair that will fit me better. This should allow me to move around easier and to also transfer myself as well.

I recently spoke with Dr. Lima, the surgeon who performed my surgery. He told me that most changes should occur after the first year, which has just past. He suggested getting vertical as much as possible, which means getting a standing frame or assisted walking machine.

I could not have come so far without the help and support of everyone, both the people I know directly and indirectly. Thank you for all of your help and support.
